Shadow Child, DJ Jackum, London Elektricity, Posthuman & DJ Hybrid

Time for another round of “Dodgy Picks”, a selection of tunes that have successfully infiltrated my regular listening habits and/or my digital record box.

This week there a few more housey tracks compared to last week’s breakbeat onslaught. If you have something to share that you think I might like to add to a future “Dodgy Picks” post, you can send me a link (as long as it’s on BandCamp). Find out how to submit tunes at the bottom of this post.

Let’s get to it…..

Shadow Child & DJ Haus – Rhythm Force Vol. 2

Shadow Child certainly knows how to evoke those old skool sounds and here he has teamed up with DJ Haus to deliver the two track EP “Rhythm Force Vol. 2” (note to self: I really should go look up Volume 1).

Leading the package is “Magic Waves” which kicks off with some classic early jungle sounding pads and rave bleeps before launching into a suitably robust breakbeat workout. Second track “Gravity Slips” utilises a deep bass synth to drive things along in another breakbeat chugger. A great package all round from Shadow Child & DJ Haus.

DJ Jackum – Vibe

“Vibe” for me is the standout track from the “Jack It EP” by DJ Jackum. It’s a no-nonsense, head-down, straight ahead garage shuffle with a “Check out the vibe” vocal hook and a BIG bass tone making its presence felt throughout.

It’s insane how short it is though, just two and half minutes? It’s all over just as you’re starting to really get into it. I blame the tik-tok generation. C’mon kids! Start listening to longer songs!

London Elektricity x DJ Marky x Makoto – Elecktrify (feat. Vonne)

It’s a VERY cold time here in the UK right now so here’s something with a bit of a “spring-time” vibe to warm things up.

To quote London Elektricity’s Bandcamp page, he is “a producer, DJ & record label owner from South London. Crafting & curating nothing but drum & bass music with soul”. That’s very what we’ve got here with ‘Elektrify’, a soulful DnB flex that is like musical medicine.

Posthuman – Extender

Released back in May of 2024 (but ironically inserted into my Apple Music feed as a “new release”), the Builder EP by Posthuman is four tracks worth of “early hours madness”. The main attraction for me is “Extender”, a house bumper that packs Detroit-style stabs for days.

If you’re a sucker for social media (like me) then Posthuman is very much worth a follow for all kinds of musical insight and general good content.

DJ Hybrid – No Need To Thank Me EP (Free Download)

This week’s free (or pay what you want) download is a four track EP from DJ Hybrid and Deep In The Jungle records.

Stand out track for me is “Wake Up Winston” (cued up in the player below), a DnB tune with all the typical shenanigans going on and a hugely satisfying bassline underpinning the track.

Be sure to check out my previous Dodgy Picks posts for other tunes that I’ve enjoyed so much I wanted to tell the whole internet about them.

If you have a tune on BandCamp that’s along the lines of Breakbeat / Rave / Drum n Bass / Old Skool / Techno (and so on) and you’d like to submit it for a possible shout out, feel free to drop me a line.

You can also follow me online via various social networks (apart from stinky ass Twitter).
